Building Permits

Property owners and contractors planning construction or remodeling projects must obtain building permits prior to starting projects.

When you file your application, include two (2)  identical sets of plans.  The Zoning Administrator will review your application for zoning compliance.  Then the Building Official will conduct a brief review of your project, including construction details, and pertinent site plans to assure compliance building code requirements.  They will also let you know if more information is needed.

Permit applications may be mailed or dropped off in person at City Hall.  You will be called with the permit fee when the permit is ready to be paid for (cash or check only) and picked up in person at City Hall.  Permit applications may be faxed (651.459.6144) only if no plans are required.

Turn Around Times--Some residential permits, such as plumbing, mechanical, re-siding and re-roofing, can be issued at the time you apply.  Most other permit applications--that are complete and accurate--may take up to five working days to process.  Applications for permits should be submitted well in advance of your scheduled starting date.  This will allow time for City staff to help you through the process and issue your permit before you are ready to start work.  This is especially true during the summer construction season.
